When love slaps you on the face life stops
Plans not yet erased cause confusion and pain
Our hearts only sound is one of hurt and forebode
Together once we were now apart forever torn
Cries at night numb to the core
Silence everywhere, depth of sound unheard
Where did all our plans go
The future is now but lost with what was
A reminder of the scorn reminder of the pain
How our hearts are town as memories remain
Time takes its toll to change our fate
To give us hope to love again
Our children show the wrath of love
Both unsaid and what is known
Souls sink into space, a place only a parent knows
When love slaps you on the face
How can we think ahead
Can’t contemplate reason to get out of bed
When love slaps you on the face
All strength in he who was falls away like melting snow
The heart closes off
The mind shuts down
We function as though you are not around
Keep on with our day
Keep on in the night
Til we cry once again for what was
Cries at night numb to the core
Silence everywhere, depth of sound unheard
Where did all our plans go
The future is now but lost with what was
Why should we listen to you
They who can’t relate to the abused
Leave with nowhere to go
Hide and raise children alone
One day we forget push aside our regret
Cater for lust not love
For comforting arms, strength behind the slap
Uncontrollable rage, closed eyes, the moment shall quickly pass
Sleep my dear and forget as we lay our children in their beds
Living life with those you know you can predict
Life without passion that is what happens
When love slaps you on the face
Then we realize, the morning of our salvation
Sun shining on the horizon
Suddenly life is creation, our hearts desire and content
A chance for happiness
Love slaps you on the face to see new beginnings
Rise from your grave of shallow insecurities
Eyes to the sky look love in the eye
Deal with the pain and pleasure
Forward we marched, mother and son
Hardened hearts, not looking for anyone
Be it friends God angels or foe
Only by resolve and opportunity to go do we all have that safe haven to feel home
Must take it, damage done oh hurtful ones
I cry for you and what was, for what could have been
For what was seen, the picture of our future
But cry for me and you no more
You chose your path, it’s yours to explore
We mean no harm to you
But no more shall suffer abuse
Take the life you desire flame it higher and higher
Seek the peace of your soul as you surely will grow old
Cries at night numb to the core
Silence everywhere, depth of sound unheard
Where did all our plans go

When Love Slaps You on the Face is a blues ballad exploring loss, resilience and renewal.
The lyrics were first written in 2007 during a period of personal reflection following the breakdown of a relationship. The words emerged intuitively, capturing emotions that were still close and unresolved.
In 2018 the piece was revisited and structured musically, with chords added to develop the earlier writing into a complete song.
The song reflects the movement from numbness toward recovery and renewal — acknowledging that the effects of trauma and grief can take years to process, particularly where support systems are absent.
Its accompanying artwork draws inspiration from the philosophy of kintsugi, where broken objects are repaired with gold, transforming damage into part of their history rather than something to conceal.
The piece was recorded and released in 2026 as part of Dianne Mead’s developing music catalogue exploring emotional awareness, resilience and transformation.
A later remix version of the song has been produced in a pop genre and may be released separately.
